A judge at the High Court of Rivers State, Nigeria, Justice Elsie earned her LL.B from the then Queen Mary College, University of London, after being called to the English Bar in 1984 and to the Nigerian Bar in 1985. She holds an LL.M in International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law from Aberystwyth University, Wales.
She served as the first Nigerian judge elected to the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (2010–2016), where she also held the position of Vice-President (2014–2016).
As a committed mentor and educator, Justice Thompson has taught at the Nigerian Law School as an adjunct lecturer. She also served on the faculty of Yale Law School’s Global Constitutionalism Seminar, and judged international legal competitions including the Price Media Law Moot at Oxford University. She is also the founder of the HAGREB Mentorship Foundation, dedicated to empowering girls and young women.
