Sexual performance-enhancing drugs in the past few years have become a major point of concern as numerous organisations dish out products to help the male and the female gender perform appropriately in bed.

The trend has seen some men believe less in themselves due to adverts watched online or on television programmes.

Their dependency to perform is attached to the sexual performance-enhancing drugs.

Some men prefer to deal with women who sell herbal extracts which have not been medically tested, which the side effect might be damaging due to inappropriate measurement for the herbal content.

Ezenwoko’s Blog correspondent reached out to a medical expert to ask questions on why people depend on sexual performance-enhancing drugs and the side effect on our health.

The doctor when asked why people use such drugs said, “people use sexual performance-enhancing drugs for different reasons but broadly can be classified into 2 classes:

“1. Medical Reasons – e.g. people with Erectile dysfunction, disorders of sperm production

“2. Social Reasons – common among youths esp students. Mostly experimental.”

The medical doctor who spoke on the condition of anonymity went further to reveal the formulations of most sexual performance-enhancing (drugs and herbs),  he said, “they are made up of 2 major active ingredients (Sildenafil and Yohimbine) which helps the males mostly to have sustained erection more than usual.”

“Medically, Sildenafil containing formulations are prescribed for ailing patients. It is commonly known as Viagra which is a brand name of Pfizer’s Sildenafil.”

He, however, stated that “drugs containing Yohimbine are being phased out already cos of its side effects which have serious health implications.

“Most official medications contain Sildenafil. However, for quite a lot of fanciful sexual performance-enhancing drugs/herbs, other things are included such as vitamins, micronutrients (e.g. Zinc, Manganese, Selenium).”

The medical expert while speaking on illegal sexual performance-enhancing drugs said, “The unofficial/illegal sexual performance-enhancing drugs might contain the aforementioned ingredients but also contains psychoactive substances.”

When asked if there are side effects to the sexual enhancing drugs, for Sildenafil he listed them as, “headache, flushing, epistaxis, dyspepsia, insomnia, erythema, diarrhoea, dizziness, skin rash.”

He also listed the side effect of Yohimbine when used, “elevated blood pressure, anxiety, irritability, headache, sweating, nausea, tachycardia, priapism, worsening of panic attacks.”

Rather than treat the side effects when it eventually unfolds, it is advisable that you prevent such occurrences and not engage in the usage of sexual enhancing drugs, or get prescriptions from a medical expert as to know things to do if faced with issues related to erectile dysfunction.

Also, note that prescriptions by a medical expert sometimes have side effects, it is expected to report back to such persons when the side effects unfold. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment save lives!
