Awoniyi’s strike lifts Union past Leipzig; Rabiu, Nwakali, Sanusi star in wins
It was a Friday night of European club football and Soccernet.ng brings you some of the highlights involving Nigerian footballers.
At the Stadion An der Alten Försterei in Berlin, Awoniyi once again proved to be the difference maker as Union Berlin secured a 2-1 derby win over high-flying neighbours, Leipzig.
After firing blank in the Iron Ones last-gasp defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt last time around, Awoniyi needed just six minutes to put the home side ahead against the visitors.
It was the Nigerian international’s ninth Bundesliga goal of the season and his 14th top-flight strike for Union Berlin, retaining his sole status as the club’s record top-scorer in the competition.
Nkunku equalised for Leipzig seven minutes after but Baumgartl’s second-half effort sealed all three points for Urs Fischer’s men.
More details shortly.
