Voting begins in Gbajabiamila’s constituency

Voting has commenced in the by-election holding in Surulere 1 Federal Constituency in Surulere, Lagos State.

The by-election is to elect a replacement for Femi Gbajabiamiala who resigned as a member of the House of Representatives to become the President’s Chief of Staff.

The accreditation exercise started at the Surulere Local Government Area Secretariat at about 8.30 a.m. on Saturday.

An INEC official at Ward 07 Polling Unit 35, who preferred anonymity, told our correspondent that there was a low turnout of voters in the unit, saying, “The turnout is low so far. We only see a few voters coming out.”

The official added that they (INEC officials) had not encountered any difficulty in the process, noting that the exercise was running smoothly.

Our correspondent also observed as various armed security personnel including police officers and personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps paraded polling units and Surulere environs to ensure a peaceful and coordinated exercise.
