Lagos bans use of styrofoam, single-use plastics

Lagos State Government on Sunday announced the ban on the use and distribution of Styrofoam and other single-use plastics across the state.

This was announced by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a statement he posted on Sunday.

Stryrofoam is used to manufacture disposable plates used in eateries.

Wahab noted that the decision was reached following the menace that single-use plastics especially the non-biodegradable Styrofoam were causing on the environment.

“Following the menace which single-use plastics especially non-biodegradable Styrofoam are causing on the environment, the Lagos State government through the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources  is hereby announcing a ban on the usage and distribution of Styrofoam and other single-use plastics in the State with immediate effect.”

Recall that the commissioner called on PSP waste operators to digitise their operations for improved waste management.

Wahab said digitisation would enhance transparency in their operations.

He advised the operators to put in place proper data collation and enumeration of all commercial and private facilities being serviced, stressing that the time had come for PSP operators to create an online portal where GPS receivers were installed in their trucks to provide accurate locations.
