The police have arraigned six drivers at an Ekiti State Chief Magistrate Court, Ado Ekiti District over Monday’s attack on the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, assault on personnel and vandalisation of the hospital property.

Some men, angry over the death of a patient in the hospital, had on Monday attacked the hospital and in the process forcibly removed the corpse.

The defendants arraigned before the court are Babalola Temitope (30), Egunjobi Babatunde (50), Adebayo Ojo (54), Akintola Adebayo (53), Festus Wele (48) and Michael Ogunleye (45).

Police prosecutor, ASP Johnson Okunade, told the court, “There is a probable cause to remand the six defendants at the correctional centre in Ado-Ekiti.

“The defendants were suspected to have committed the offence of conspiracy, vandalisation and wilful destruction of government property, threatening violence and assault on health workers at the EKSUTH in Ado Ekiti.

“The offences are punishable under Section 3(a) of the Miscellaneous Offence Act LFN 2004, Section 364(c) and 185 of the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State 2021”.

Okunade, who urged the court to remand the six defendants, added that the case file had been forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions, for legal advice.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr. A. O. Adeosun, ordered the remand of the defendants at the custody of the correctional centre in Ado Ekiti and adjourned the case till February 19, for mention.
