Kidnapped Nasarawa varsity students regain freedom
The seven kidnapped students of the Federal University of Lafia, Nasarawa State, have regained their freedom.
PUNCH Online reports that armed men had on Thursday morning stormed the Gandu community which is about two kilometres away from the university and whisked the students to an unknown destination.
Confirming the release of the kidnapped students to journalists in Lafia on Monday, the institution’s Head of Information and Public Relations, Abubakar Ibrahim, said the students were released around 8 pm on Sunday.
“Yes, the students have regained their freedom and they have been reunited with their families after medical examination and counselling”, Abubakar said.
Ibrahim added that all the students had been reunited with their families after undergoing medical examinations and counselling.
The spokesperson also disclosed that the institution in collaboration with the state government and law enforcement agencies had beefed up security in and around the university to avert a recurrence of the incident.
Meanwhile, when contacted to get the reaction of the Nasarawa State Police Command on the matter, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ramhan Nansel, said the command was not informed about the kidnap or release of the students.
