Aribo celebrates Afcon call-up with St Mirren assist

The Nigerian international was named in the Super Eagles squad for Cameroon 2021 on Saturday, and twenty-four hours later, he delivered a fine performance

Joe Aribo was impressive again as champions Rangers claimed a satisfactory 2-0 win over St Mirren in a Boxing Day clash at the Ibrox.

The Gers secured their 16th league win of the campaign following first-half goals from Scott Wright and Alfredo Morelos.

Aribo assisted the opening goal when he flicked on a James Tavernier corner for Wright to nod in after just 14 minutes.

Morelos added a second in the 27th-minute as Gio van Bronckhorst’s men go five points clear at the top of the league.

Compatriot Calvin Bassey once again starred at the heart of the Gers’ defence as the home side sealed yet another clean sheet.

Aside from the goals, Aribo delivered a typically energetic display, making four key passes, getting a shot on target, and winning seven of his duels.

It is a fitting way for Aribo to celebrate his selection to represent the Super Eagles at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. The former Charlton Athletic midfielder, who made his international debut in 2020, will be making his debut at the continent’s biggest showpiece.

Unlike Aribo, Bassey did not make the Super Eagles’ 28-man shortlist.
