‘How can you score 35 goals in the Belgian league without one club looking after you’- Onuachu on transfer failure
The Nigeria international was the highest goalscorer in Belgium last season, but surprisingly he remained at Genk despite his feat
Super Eagles and Genk forward Paul Onuachu has opened up on his transfer dilemma at Genk. The former Midtjylland man expressed his disappointment with his inability to leave Cegeka Arena in the summer despite scoring 35 goals last season.
The Nigeria international scored 35 domestic goals in Belgium last season, and after his feat, it was expected that he would make the big move to one of the top sides in Europe.
However, it didn’t work out for Onuachu as, despite his links to Premier League sides West Ham and Arsenal in the summer, he remained with The Smurfs.
The 27-year-old has now opened up on why he could not secure a move away from Belgium.
“Yes, because I had the feeling that something was not right,” Onuachu told Hln as per Voetbalkrant.
“How can you score 35 goals in the Belgian league without one club looking after you. That is why I decided to take another broker.”
‘If I was 22 or 23, Genk could even ask 30 million for me. No problem. But I will be 28 next summer. For a player my age, 25 million is a lot of money.”
Nevertheless, Onuachu has risen from the disappointments of the summer, scoring twelve goals in eighteen Jupiler League appearances for Genk this season.
If he continues with his outstanding performances, a move away from Belgium could still suffice.
