AFCON 2021: Eguavoen opens up on players selection but refuses to state Super Eagles objective
The former Nigeria international is expected to name Nigeria’s squad for the party in Cameroon anytime soon, and he has given a hint on players that will make his selection
Interim Super Eagles head coach Austin Eguavoen has revealed that he would likely select players from Gernot Rohr’s 40-man provisional list for Nigeria’s squad at next year’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The AFCON begins on January 9 in Cameroon, and participating teams are expected to release their squad list for the competition anytime soon.
Eguavoen is in charge of naming Nigeria’s squad after he replaced Gernot Rohr as the coach of the three-time African Champions.
But before Rohr was sacked, he confirmed in an interview with Soccernet that he had sent a 40-man provisional list to CAF in November.
And Eguavoen has now confirmed it, adding that the final selection of players will likely come from Rohr’s provisional list.
“The list is out, and we’ve talked about it,” Eguavoen said in an interview with Soccernet.
“The list goes to CAF, so it is from there we are going to see how we get the details back home.”
“So it is from that we are going to pick the players, the list Gernot Rohr submitted,” he added.
The Super Eagles have won the AFCON three times, but Eguavoen refused to state the team’s objective going into Cameroon when Soccernet asked him.
“I don’t think I wanna answer that because somebody is going to war, you’re asking the person what’s your objective in going to war. I think such question shouldn’t come up,” he added.
Nigeria begin their campaign with a clash against Egypt on January 11 before further games against Sudan and Guinea-Bissau.
