Police Boss Tells Nigerians What To Do When Officers At Checkpoints Request For Their Phones

Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP, Bassey Ewah, has asked Nigerians not to give their phones to policemen who stop them at checkpoints without a warrant.

The deputy commissioner made this known while speaking on Wednesday, Nov. 10, during a question and answer session at the just concluded program organized by the Police Community Relation Committee.

According to the DCP, a warrant is needed before any officer can check the phones of Nigerians.

Ewah said police officers carrying out an investigation would present a warrant before asking for a person’s phone.

He then encouraged Nigerians not to give their phones to any officer who doesn’t show them a warrant.

He said: “I stand to be corrected; please do not give any policeman who stopped you on the checkpoint your phones; it’s not our schedule. If we are investigating you, we will present a warrant and then demand your phone. Please take note.”

Meanwhile, seven policemen have been killed after bandit terrorists ambushed them near Zonai village in Magami district in Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

According to residents, the police officers were on their way back from a duty where they mounted a check point near Zonai village along Gusau-Magami-Dansadau road when the bandits attacked them.

It was gathered that the armed terrorists opened fire on the vehicle conveying the security operatives.

“It is a very sad development especially for us in Magami town because the policemen had tremendously helped in stabilizing the horrific security situation in this axis,” a resident identified as Halliru told Daily Trust.

In fact, their presence at that checkpoint had boosted the confidence of the travellers to ply that road. Dozens of travellers have been killed or kidnapped along the 50 km Gusau-Magami road. It is really sad and tragic.”
