As the death toll rises to 20, Governor Babajide Sanwoolu of Lagos State has visited the scene of the collapsed 21-storey building in the Ikoyi area of the state.

Ezenwoko’s Blog reports that the governor visited the scene around 1 a.m on Wednesday to get first-hand information of the situation and update on the rescue operations.

During the visit, the governor thanked all first responders on the scene and all federal and state agencies that joined in the rescue efforts.

He particularly appreciated construction giants Julius Berger, Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for their efforts.

Sanwo-Olu promised that the state government would investigate the incident and punish officials and civilians found culpable.

The governor noted that several measures will be put in place for the welfare of the responders and protection while carrying out the difficult task.

Sanwo-Olu said that efforts were ongoing by NEMA and other responders to recover victims trapped beneath the rubbles.

Meanwhile, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar-Farouq, has condoled with the state government and families of the victims.

The minister, who was at the site on Tuesday, said: “This is tragic. I sympathize with the Lagos State government and families of people still trapped inside the rubble.

“We have mobilized immediate rescue operations through the NEMA team from the Lagos Territorial Office to team up with the state SEMA. NEMA has also facilitated the mobilization of response involving heavy-duty equipment for rescue operations and security for crowd control.

“We pray that through the rescue operatives still on the ground at the site, many of those trapped will be rescued.”
