2023 Presidency: Details Of Anyim’s Meeting With Babangida, Abdulsalami Emerge
Former Senate President and Secretary to the Federal Government, Anyim Pius Anyim, has disclosed his intention to contest the presidency in 2023.
Anyim made this known when he met with former military President, Ibrahim Babangida and former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar at their residences in Minna, the Niger state capital, on Saturday.
In a post on his Facebook page on Sunday, Anyim stated that he was in Minna to inform the former leaders of his intention to contest in the forthcoming 2023 presidential election.
The former SGF disclosed that both leaders were generous with their wise advice and shared with him their deep knowledge of the country’s history.
Anyim submitted that his interaction with Babangida and Abubakar has encouraged him to aspire to become the next president and build a stronger and more united Nigeria.
He, however, revealed his intention to seek the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to contest the 2023 presidential election
He wrote: “I met with former President Ibrahim Babangida and former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar. I consulted with them on my intention to contest for the presidency of our beloved country. Both leaders are rich in vision and deep in the grasp of our history. They were generous with their wise counsels.
“I am further emboldened in the conviction that I can make significant contributions in our collective quest to consolidate democracy, build a stronger and more united Nigeria.
“I feel very enriched and invigorated. Long live Nigeria.”
In a related development, Anyim has denied saying that it was not right for the Southeast to produce Nigeria’s next president.
In a statement by his media office on Sunday, Anyim said the report was not a true reflection of what he said at an event organised by a group, United For Better Nigeria Initiative, in Abuja at the weekend.
The PDP chieftain stated that it would be contradictory for him to be aspiring for the presidency and at the same time said it is not right for Nigeria to have a president of Igbo extraction in 2023.
Anyim said his comment at the event was grossly misrepresented and misquoted, asking the general public to disregard the said statements.
